Decommissioning a windfarm, a goldmine of resources

On Tuesday 19 March, the concept presentations of the What if Lab: Upcycled Turbines in collaboration with Vattenfall will take place. The four participating design studios will then present the concepts they have developed in recent months to promote circularity in wind farm decommissioning.

Circularity is a key theme for designers and industries alike. The materials used for renewable energy provide us with a stock at the end of its life to be re-used. But how do we reuse this range of components of a wind turbine in an efficient and effective way? All creative and innovative minds are needed for our society’s important transitions in energy and raw materials. During Dutch Design Week October 2023, Vattenfall kicked off the What if Lab on circularity in wind energy and teamed up with the Dutch Design Foundation to spark new ways for collaboration on this theme.

The four selected design studios did an in-depth dive into the world of wind turbines over the past five months. They analysed the traits of the different components and exchanged with thought leaders, experts from the industry, researchers and designers. They developed concepts coming from different angles, and exchanged on those with Vattenfall and other organisations in the field. They will now present their final concepts for potential future routes towards circularity in wind energy.

We present to you the concepts that are developed by architectural firms cepezed and Superuse Studios / Blade–Made, and design studios Studio Carbon and Interactivist. Our host Froukje Jansen will guide you through the day and take you along on this journey.
