DDW24: BouwBox

In What if Lab: Equal Opportunities (2021), ABN AMRO partnered with social design studio (ink). to find a solution for financial equality between men and women.

Target group research showed that although full paternity leave was available, it was barely taken due to stigma. While science proves that paternity leave is a great equaliser. Out of the lab came the concept BouwBox developed by (ink). The BouwBox is a box of symbolic building blocks with a magazine that encourages people to think about equal caregiving responsibilities in young families – and presents taking paternity leave in light of equality as essential. Through reframing and stories of experience, taking paternity leave becomes the norm rather than the exception.

In a pilot programme, ABN AMRO produced the box to give as a leave gift to expectant parents. This resulted in a significant increase in taking parental leave, from 49% to 85%. In addition, participants experienced a positive shift in company culture, more freedom, success and peace of mind. Following this, ABN AMRO intends to offer the Construction Box to every expectant parent.

Based on various themes, discover how we as a society can connect the power of design to the complex challenges of today and tomorrow. About 40 projects from What if Lab, World Design Embassies and PONT depict a world addressing today’s questions and exploring a promise for a better future. Caring Neighbourhoods is one of those projects.
